The idea in brief

A blind box offers more than an object: a character to collect, a moment of anticipation and something to share. POP MART’s regular figures and larger collectible formats let us separate functional value from emotional value—and ask what makes repeated purchases attractive.

An object, an emotion, a collection.

Characters give the object meaning

MOLLY, DIMOO and THE MONSTERS, including LABUBU, give collectors recognisable characters and visual worlds. A figure can offer decoration, enjoyment or a sense of companionship. Its utility need not come from a practical task.MOLLY、DIMOO,以及包含 LABUBU 的 THE MONSTERS 等 IP,为收藏者提供可识别的角色与视觉世界。

The unopened box is part of the product

Buyers know the series but not the individual figure inside. The reveal creates an experience of its own. Hidden editions add rarity, but their appeal still depends on demand; a small supply alone cannot guarantee a high resale price.

A series creates a reason to return

A collection can feel incomplete when one design is missing. This may encourage another purchase or a swap with other collectors. The extra satisfaction from each new figure can differ: a missing favourite and a duplicate are not equivalent.

THE ECONOMIC LENS /

Uncertainty is not automatically information asymmetry. When nobody knows the contents of an individual sealed box, uncertainty is shared; unequal access to relevant information is a separate issue.

A small entry price, a larger decision.

Count the alternative you give up计算你放弃的其他选择

A single box may fit a small discretionary budget, but the relevant opportunity cost is what that money could otherwise buy. Repeated purchases should be evaluated as a total, rather than as a sequence of apparently small payments.

Resale prices can become anchors

A highly visible resale listing can make the original retail price look attractive. Yet a listing is not a completed transaction, and the most expensive rare figure is not the likely outcome of every purchase. Check actual sales and the probability of each outcome.

Different formats serve different budgets

Regular blind boxes and MEGA collectibles offer different sizes, materials and experiences. This is product and price tiering. Calling it price discrimination requires a closer look at costs and whether comparable products are priced differently across buyers.

THE ECONOMIC LENS /

Do not infer a profitable gamble from the price of one rare figure. Expected resale proceeds require probabilities, actual selling prices, fees and the possibility of not finding a buyer.

Make the moment easy to act on.

Stores and vending machines

A shop or vending machine places the product close to everyday foot traffic. The ability to browse, buy and open a box in one visit reduces waiting and search effort. Convenience can influence an unplanned purchase.

The digital reveal

POP NOW brings the reveal into an online purchase. The experience can occur before a physical delivery, separating the emotional moment from the logistics. Availability and rules differ by market and series.POP NOW

Temporary spaces add a sense of occasion

Pop-ups and themed displays can make a visit feel like an event. Photographs, shared visits and a limited opening period may add experiential value. They also require staffing, rent and design expenditure.

THE ECONOMIC LENS /

Transaction costs include time, travel and effort. Reducing them makes a purchase easier; it does not prove that the purchase improves the buyer’s overall wellbeing.

A reveal that other people want to watch.

Unboxing makes shareable content

The sequence of waiting, opening and reacting creates a small story. Collectors can share that story without being paid by the brand, helping other people discover the figures. This is earned attention, not evidence of zero marketing costs.

Belonging can influence demand

Conversation, trading and shared taste can make collecting social. People may value a figure partly because friends recognise it. This is social influence; a technical claim about network effects needs evidence that more participants increase each user’s value.

Distinguish enjoyment from sunk costs

The desire to complete a set may sustain interest. But money already spent is a sunk cost: it should not, by itself, justify another purchase. Compare the next box’s expected enjoyment with its cost and your remaining budget.

THE ECONOMIC LENS /

A useful case explains behaviour without encouraging it. Distinguish enjoyment, social pressure and expected monetary return.

Your turn to think.

Compare a sealed box and a known-design figure at the same price. Who would prefer each option? Explain your answer with utility, uncertainty and opportunity cost.
